DOMINIC TAYLOR
SELF-PORTRAITS 2008
Taylor´s loyal collectors in Geneva cover the spectrum of self-made millionaires, inheritors of family dynasties, bankers, hotel owners, retired executives and successful people from the world of marketing and Creative Industries.
These collectors began asking him for photographic portraits as they wanted something different – more artistic – for their family albums and to display in their homes.
Although he has been concentrating on his unique tar paintings for the past decade, he has gradually shifted towards photography of the abstract, experimental kind.
These two developments – his collectors requesting creative family portraits and his own refocusing on photography – resulted in the idea of a new series in 2008, “Prominent People”.
The first six subjects of this study are well-known faces from Berlin, a place that attracts socially minded, critically thinking intellectuals and artists from around the world. It is not surprising then that this portraiture spans the high end of the art market with the Director of Art Forum Berlin, the world-famous annual fair, to multi-million dollar investments in the film industry, represented by Germany´s most successful producer and head of the Babelsberg Film Studio.
During the intense energy of the Berlinale in February 2008, the “Karneval” for cinema lovers that truly drives away bad spirits in the Northern European winter, Taylor visited Berlin for the second time to photograph his first group of personalities, including the Belgian founder of the Women´s Business Club Germany, a Russian art collector and entrepreneur as well as the leading lights of Germany´s most famous theatre for contemporary drama, the Schaubühne Berlin.
His next group of subjects include international Creative Industries celebrities in Germany, Switzerland, France and the UK… keep watching this space for the portraiture of Prominent People !
